Unsung Hero: Offensive Lineman # 71 Paul Pinegar

Liz Clarke touched on a lot of points I want to make in her article
Maryland's seniors go out on top after win over North Carolina State

Offensive Lineman Paul Pinegar's story is perhaps the best reason why I love following this football team. I try to get to each game early to catch player warm ups. To see these guys up close working hard and doing what it takes to become reliable players over the course of four years is a treat for me as a fan.

So as the article pointed out, Pinegar wasn't heavily recruited out of high school. He makes the team as a walk on and works hard by doing whatever was needed to help his team. This year as a senior Pinegar has played anywhere Coach Ralph Friedgen has asked as the Terps have had mounting injuries on their offensive line. He's definitely one of the Terps unsung heroes this season.

He came up with a huge fumble recovery in the second quarter vs N.C. State.

From the Post article Pinegar was quoted:

"This past week was a huge week of reflection, looking back at all the great memories. I've been saying ever since we started winter workouts last year, 'It's my last winter workout.' Or: 'It's the last spring workout. The last Red-and-White Game. The last week of regular season practice. The last home game."

"I wouldn't trade it for the world. This has been my life. This has been my second family."

Maryland vs N.C. State Pictures

Interesting day Saturday. I met my friends that I went to the Maryland-Elon basketball game with and we hung out on the field during Maryland's pregame warm up. Then I took my regular seat in Section 19 for the first quarter when I got a text from my friend Dave, who I had not seen since he moved to Chicago two years ago. I spent the second quarter with him and his family in Section 8.

At halftime, I moved on to see my friends in Section 23 and from there I watched the rest of Maryland's victory. After the game, we went to Gossett Field House and sat in on Head Coach Friedgen's press conference. He talked about the game, the Terps seniors and the post season. We saw a couple Bowl representatives from the Chick-Fil-A Bowl and Champs Sports Bowl. I believe the Chick-Fil-A Bowl is interested in N.C. State. Just my two cents here but I do hope the Champs Sports Bowl representative was impressed with a team that improved from 2-10 to 8-4 that has a red shirt freshman QB throw for 417 yards and 4 TD's and a Lambourghini WR who caught 14 passes for 224 yards and 4 TD's. From there, we met Assistant Coaches Don Brown and Dave Sollazzo before we had a moment with Coach Friedgen.

In closing out the regular season, I hope everyone who checked in here on a week to week basis enjoyed the picture essays every home game and found this blog informative. I tried to capture the experience of Maryland Football via my camera from my seat in Section 19. I know I need some work on improving my skills which is why I'll be at other Terp sports in the future trying to learn more.

Go Terps!!!
