The Terps 2012 Football schedule was released today. Personally, I like this a lot. Alternating home and away games. Out of conference schedule first, a bye week, then the ACC schedule starts.

Game Pictures: North Carolina 83, Maryland 74

Terrell Stoglin scored 20 points for Maryland, one of four Terps to score double figures but fifth ranked North Carolina held off upset minded Maryland 83-74 Saturday.

The Tar Heels (20-3, 7-1 ACC) got everything they could handle from the Terps.

Alex Len scored 12 points, had nine rebounds and four blocked shots. This was his best game in my opinion since joining the Terps in late December. Sean Mosley and Nick Faust each scored 11 points for the Terps (13-9, 3-5 ACC).

Tyler Zeller scored 22 points and John Henson had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead North Carolina.Harrison Barnes, playing on a sprained left ankle, scored 18 points.

Henson was a force during the last ten minutes of the game for the Tar Heels, scoring 12 points during that time period. Henson's basket on a goaltending call against Alex Len with 2:00 left gave the Tar Heels a five point lead at 74-69.

Kendall Marshall contributed 16 assists as the Tar Heels earned its fifth straight win and 14th in 15 games.

The game marked the first time that Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon faced his former mentor at Kansas, North Carolina coach Roy Williams.

Turgeon's Terps almost pulled off the upset but it wasn't to be as the Terps made just one field goal over the final three minutes. Ballgame Tar Heels.

Coach Turgeon's Post Game Press Conference

Opening statement:
We played well again. [We] played with great hustle and great effort. We did a lot of things really well. [We] had a stretch in the second half where we couldn't get into anything. Pe'Shon [Howard] was on the bench. [We] just didn't look like we could get into anything, and when [Tyler] Zeller was out I thought we could've made a run. And then we made some mistakes defensively and couldn't rebound. I know I'm going to watch the tape and probably be disappointed in our effort on the glass [which] is something I'm on these guys about. It was the number one key of the game for us and second was transition. We did a great job in transition, but we didn't do a great job boxing out and rebounding and a lot of it is just [North Carolina's] length and size. There's a reason they were preseason number one in the country. They have really good players and I thought their best players stepped up. [John] Henson, [Harrison] Barnes and Zeller stepped up when the game was on the line and made all the plays.

On his team's struggles rebounding:
It's really simple. I`ve never had more trouble getting a team to be more physical on box outs. We've worked on it, we talk about it, we work on it every day and some of it's going to be their length, but a lot it's going to be just us not competing on the glass when we need to compete. [If we] just could have gotten a couple rebounds in there it might have been a different outcome.

On the play of Alex Len as well as Berend Weijs:
Alex was really good. I thought him and Berend in the first half changed the game. I thought they protected the rim great, and Alex was much more aggressive with the basketball. We did a good job. I thought our post defense for the most part was pretty good. I thought our transition was pretty good. But Alex played well. I'm proud of him. He's young and played against two really good players and held his own, so [there were] a lot of positives.

On containing North Carolina:
I think it was a couple things. I think we really did a great job [defensively] and I thought they missed some open ones for us. But I've never in my coaching career sent three guys back when a shot goes up. We sent three guys back tonight and I thought our big guys did a great job of running back for the most part. [Kendall Marshall] is as good as I've ever seen. He's something else - 16 assists. He had six turnovers which is not his style. I like to think I can see things being a former point guard. He sees things coming on the break and he's really at another level.

Terrell Stoglin scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half leading Maryland to a 73-69 victory over Virginia Tech. The win enabled the Terps (13-7, 3-3 ACC) to snap a three game losing streak.

Sean Mosley scored 15 points for the Terps and James Padgett had eight points and eleven rebounds. Maryland almost blew a 15 point lead as the Hokies cut the lead to two points with five seconds left, but Stoglin made two foul shots with 3.6 seconds left to ice the win.

For Virginia Tech (12-9, 1-5 ACC), the loss was their sixth in seven games. The Hokies were led by Erick Green's 18 points. Dorenzo Hudson and Victor Davila each scored 14.

Maryland had a 36-21 lead early in the second half before the Hokies woke up. Hudson nailed two straight three pointers and the Hokies went on a 13-4 run that cut Maryland's lead to 40-34. Stoglin then drilled a three pointer for the Terps and hit another three and after Mosley stole the ball to put the Terps ahead by twelve 46-34.

But Virginia Tech would not quit. Jarell Eddie was a big reason as he made a three pointer, a three-point play and a pair of foul shots to cut into the Terps lead.
Up seven, Stoglin followed with a 3-pointer, and minutes later he made two free throws for a 58-46 lead with 6 minutes to go. Ballgame, right? No.

The Hokies scrapped and cut the Maryland lead to 60-55 with three minutes left. But Terrell Stoglin drilled a huge three pointer and with three free throws by Mosley with 1:09 left the Terps were up 66-58. Erick Green made two lay ups to bring the Hokies to within four at 66-62. But the Terps hit key free throws down the stretch and escaped with the victory.

Maryland Head Coach Mark Turgeon addressed the media after the game.

I thought we were great defensively. The first 20 minutes we really prepared well. I think in the last eight days we've gotten so much better as a team. A lot of it is preparation; I think we really guarded their sets well. In the second half they spread us and we weren't quite as good, but we were still pretty good in that stretch. I thought our execution was better than it has been. Quite frankly, I think up until the 38-minute mark we were as good as we've been this year. It felt very comfortable when we had double-digit leads and the guys were playing well, but true to course the way we are, we had to make it interesting. Giving up layup after layup and we missed free throws, but give credit to them because they had a lot of fight in them. We had one bad turnover against the press and besides that I think we handled it pretty well. I'm proud of our group, it was a great win for us. Any win is a good win. We are 3-3 in the league and we're heading in the right direction which I'm happy about. It shows in the way we play.

[Terps as a young team]I think it's a young team. I think it's a lack of concentration which I think is because of a lack of experience and the gumption to get it done at a high level. I hope that the things you're seeing us do this year you won't see us doing later this year or in the future. We were up 10 at the 3-minute time out, our goal was to win by 16 points. How do you do that? You execute, you make free throws and you get stops. It's a good win from a young team.

[Terrell Stoglin] He's gotten better. His last three games coming into this game were better. I thought he was a little selfish in the first half; we took him out twice because of his shot selection. But he's got a will to win. He hit those back-to-back three's for us and those were huge. But I don't like zero assists and 5 turnovers and I don't like 7-16 either. But, that's who we are, with that said I think we executed better and we have been getting better. We don't get assists because when we throw it in the post, our guys dribble like nine times before they shoot it. But we are executing and we're getting it to the post; which to me is a coach's assist, which is still doing the same thing.

[Team Improvement] I started getting after them after we lost to Florida State because I don't think we played well down there especially in the second half. We're doing the same things. They went into the showers after that game laughing and joking, and it's not that way. I don't care about winning and losing but they know better than that. We talked about giving more and preparing harder, doing what you're doing, and being a better teammate. But, it has been pretty intense and I think that you can see that. I think you see a team that really cares about each other. Our preparation for the last three games has been off the charts, and this one has by far been the best. It showed by the way we defended and our preparation. I don't want to brag about them too much because we've had three games in one week and we lost two of them. It's a lot more fun to be around and it's a lot more fun to coach. I'll give credit to my wife, who went to Penn State, and mother-in-law, was something Joe Paterno said in an article, "Hustle and good things will happen." So, my thought for the day yesterday was, "Have fun, hustle and good things will happen." That was our approach the past two days. "Have fun, hustle and good things will happen." And they did.

Maryland vs Duke Pictures

Terrell Stoglin scored 16 points and Pe'Shon Howard added 10, but it wasn't enough to stop eighth ranked Duke as the Blue Devils scored a 74-61 victory over the Terps.

Mason Plumlee scored a game-high 23 points for the Blue Devils (17-3, 5-1 ACC) and Ryan Kelly scored 14 for the Blue Devils.

Before the game, Maryland honored former coach Gary Williams by dedicating the court in his name. Williams, the winningest coach in Maryland Basketball history, entered the arena with his signature fist pump and addressed the crowd. Very emotional moment for this Terps fan and I was proud to be among those on the court covering the game for Inside MD Sports.

Down four points in the second half, the Terps (12-7, 2-3) got a three pointer from Howard and a Stoglin basket to move in front. After a Duke miss, Maryland's 7-foot-1 center Alex Len hit a fadeaway jumper in the lane to give the Terps a three point lead, 45-42.

Austin Rivers answered for Duke with two straight baskets and that led to a Blue Devil 11-2 run.

Duke was up five before Rivers scored on a drive and Kelly hit a jumper to put Duke up by nine with under nine minutes left. Maryland went nearly five minutes without a field goal before Nick Faust hit a 3-pointer to get the Terps to within five at 57-52 with under eight minutes left in the game. However, Duke proved too tough down the stretch for the young Terps and they get the win 74-61.

Coach Turgeon addressed the media after the game:

That was a great college basketball game until about the 3:00 mark. The crowd was off the charts, it was fantastic to see, it was the first time I've seen it. I thought our team battled well and think we had a game plan and we stuck to it and it kept us around. We knew Mason Plumlee is a good player and he was the difference. There were a lot of hustle plays in the second half, 50-50 balls and free throw shooting was pretty much the whole game when it comes right down to it. We made some mistakes down in the stretch, we couldn't get stops, and hopefully we'll learn from it. To give them credit, they played a great game.

We're getting better. If you could have been in Puerto Rico, you would have never thought that we could play like we're playing right now. So, we're getting there. We have to give them credit. They are physical and I think they got a lot of breaks tonight and they create their own breaks too. There are still four minute stretches were we aren't making a field goal, and that is not going to beat good teams. That happens, when we're good offensively, we're good. But we have stretches where we don't make free throws too. It wears you out and you can't keep up. In the end, our defense wasn't quite good enough and rebounding wasn't quite good enough, neither was our free throw shooting. But, our effort was tremendous and I'm really proud of the guys.

[The crowd and atmosphere] It was great. I'd like to see it more often. I know we're in a 3 game losing streak and we're 12-7, 2-3 in the league so that has something to do with it. But, it was fun. I thought our guys used it the right way. In the first half we went a little crazy, we had gone for seven three's and I think we had six before the first timeout. After we made a couple, the guys were feeling good about themselves. I didn't like our shot selection early but we used the crowd on defense. That was great; it made a huge difference in the game for us. That was fun. I can't wait until we get to the point where we get our program where I know we are going to get it; where we are selling every game out, not just Duke and North Carolina. That is when it is going to be a lot of fun, when we sell out every game.

We are a young team, we are inexperienced, we make mental errors, and we don't make free throws. You may ask if it is an offensive problem or defensive problem, I think it is an everything problem. I think we are getting closer in everything we do. But, I do think offensively we are still trying to figure it out.

I get to cover six basketball games for the University of Maryland this season for
Inside MD Sports. Here is my second game.

I'm still a work in progress shooting basketball as you can see. I just need some more practice and basketball game experience. Ok, that said, the Terps played a complete game today vs Samford winning 75-63. For the Terps (9-3) it was their sixth straight win.

I was able to sit in during Coach Turgeon's post game press conference in the media room and picked this up... "We wanted to dominate the paint, offensively and defensively, and we wanted to play inside-out,” Turgeon said. “That’s the way we’re trying to establish ourselves. If you can establish the inside, then it opens it for everybody.”

He also wanted to get his bench some playing time as a reward for their hard work in practice. It was a solid December for Maryland, which went unbeaten during the month for the first time since 2008-09.

The Washington Post did a great feature on Torrey last year.

This is one of my favorite pictures I took of Torrey in action for Maryland. Last year vs N.C. State in a tight game, QB Danny O'Brien connected with Torrey for a TD score and I was lucky enough to get this from my seat. Everyone in the section was jumping up and down, thus the blur but I think that adds a bit to the photo.

Four Terps Gain Year of Eligibility

Cheeseboro, Robinson, Ross and Tate earn medical hardship

The ACC notified Maryland today that Wide Receiver Tyrek Cheeseboro, Defensive Back Matt Robinson, Defensive Lineman Isaiah Ross and Linebacker Kenny Tate were approved for medical hardship waivers.

"It was great news to hear that each of them gained another year," Terps Head Coach Randy Edsall said. "We're looking forward to having all four of these young men healthy for 2012."

Cheeseboro (#80) played in three games on special teams in 2011 and will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Robinson (#40 shown here vs WVU) started the first three games before suffering his injury. He will have three years left to play.

Ross was injured in the opening game against Miami and will be a redshirt junior next season.

Tate was in his senior season before missing the final eight games of the year. He was a 2010 first team All-ACC pick.

Heal up soon! I can't wait to see these guys on the field next season.

Maryland Basketball vs Notre Dame: BB&T Classic

Now that Maryland's football season is over, I plan to do a little Maryland Basketball work this season.

I covered the Terps-Notre Dame on Sunday for Inside MD Sports. This was my first basketball game I've shot on the court. As you can see I have some work to do. I learned quite a bit yesterday but I need some more basketball experience. I plan to experiment with a couple different lenses at a high school game before my next Maryland Basketball game on December 31 vs Samford.

Maryland beat Notre Dame 78-71. The Terps (4-3) played perhaps their most complete game of the young season. Terrell Stoglin led the Terps in scoring with 31 points, one point short of his career high. Stoglin also clinched the victory by sinking an outside jumper with 13 seconds left in the game.

Sean Mosley scored 17 points and James Padgett recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.

After the game I hung around and attended the post game press conference in the Verizon Center Media Room. Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey spoke first, followed by Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon. Terps James Padgett, Sean Mosley and Terrell Stoglin joined Coach Turgeon later.

Joe Vellano: First Team All-ACC

Defensive Tackle Joe Vellano was the Maryland Terrapins defense this year. If I had a vote for ACC Defensive Player of the Year, he would get it from me. I am proud to have seen him play this season and so I was very happy to see that he made the First Team All-ACC.

A junior, Vellano led all DTs in tackles nationally and against Georgia Tech this season he had a career-high 20 tackles including 14 solo tackles and a tackle for loss.

For a game summary of this latest defeat, I refer you to the links below. Today we saw:

The first team from a major conference in college football history to sandwich two 10-loss seasons around a winning season.

2009: 2-10
2010: 9-4
2011: 2-10

A team score over 40 points in a game and lose by double digits. That's twice this season as the Terps also did this against Clemson on 10/15, losing 56-45.

So the off season begins now and so do the questions. Which underclassmen will transfer and there be changes to Coach Edsall's staff?

“We’re going to sit back and evaluate the season, take a look at the season. I am going to be heading out recruiting tomorrow. We’re going to have a team meeting tomorrow night and then I am going recruiting. In due time, I will sit down and evaluate the whole season and work from there."

Scratch WR Ronnie Tyler off the depth chart as he's been suspended for academic reasons. A senior, this would have been Tyler’s last game with the Terps.

Tyler caught 18 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown this year. He's had discipline issues before as he was suspended for the West Virginia and Temple games this season and he and was also suspended for academic reasons for the Military Bowl last season.

Didn't see the game due to a family obligation. What else needs to be said? Terps lose their seventh straight. They gave up 500 plus yards again. I did duck out from the party I was at and caught on the radio when the Terps cut the Wake Forest lead to seven towards (17-10) the end of the third quarter and thought they had a chance. It was not to be as Wake Forest scored two 4th quarter touchdowns to seal the win and earn a chance at a bowl. The Terps (2-9) season ends next Saturday at North Carolina State in Raleigh, NC.

Alex Twine: ACC Rookie of the Week

Maryland Linebacker Alex Twine was honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for his play Saturday in the Terps 45-21 loss to Notre Dame.

Twine had a career-best 12 tackles vs the Fightin' Irish. He's been one of the bright spots in a dismal season for the Terps In just his third career start, Twine had three tackles for losses (most by any Terrapin defender this season) and one sack.

Twine has played in all ten games this season. He averaged ten tackles in his three starts and for the season, he has 35 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss, one sack, and one recovered fumble.

The season just keeps getting uglier and uglier for Maryland. Last night at Fed Ex Field they were never really in the game. Result: Another opponent gains over 500 total yards and the Terps lose 45-21.

And it went from bad to worse as starting QB Danny O'Brien broke his non-throwing arm and is out for the season. Danny tweeted about it this morning.

I really wish I could be at this game tonight. Unfortunately I have bronchitis and was told by my doctor under no circumstances do I venture out to Fed Ex Field and take pictures from the sidelines unless I want to deal with pneumonia.

Since I don't want that, I will be watching the game on TV. I call this Maryland's bowl game and I'm disappointed I won't be out there working and supporting the team tonight.

Here's some more shots from all home games that haven't been posted on the blog. I take between 700-1,000 shots a game and not every shot makes it here. My goals were to catch the game action happening right in front of me as well as some other things I see during the course of the game. Things like the tv time out guy in action, injured Terps on the sidelines rooting their team on or field conditions to name a few. I really learned a lot this season on the sidelines and I hope I am back next season covering the Terps for Inside MD Sports.

Mother Nature threw everything at us today. We had rain, wind, sleet and snow. When I went down to the field twenty minutes before the game, I didn't take many photos of warm ups and my game shots were down as well as I tried my best to keep me and my camera dry. Next year I invest in good rain gear. In seven years of having season tickets in Section 19, I think I sat through four rain games. This year there have been five home games featuring rain. I ended up going back upstairs to the media room for good at half with Maryland trailing 21-3. So here's what I got. I actually had fun taking pictures during the snow as I thought it made a cool back drop.

No complaints because despite the weather woes, I am enjoying the opportunity I have to shoot Maryland Football from field level. It's what I've wanted to do since I started this blog. I'm just wishing for a beautiful Fall afternoon next Saturday when Maryland closes out its home schedule vs Virginia because there is nothing like a college football game on a nice, crisp Saturday.

Pete DeSouza: Determination and Courage

A little over a year ago was a time to forget for offensive lineman Pete DeSouza.
DeSouza, a redshirt freshman at the time, suffered fractured bones in both lower legs in a scooter accident. He had surgery and since then has been working hard at making a full recovery.

The crutches and plastic boots covering his feet are gone and he probably will not play at all during the 2011 season. That won’t stop him from his ultimate goal: Getting back in the starting lineup for the 2012 season.

In 2010, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound DeSouza played five games at right tackle and started three. The future looked bright; his hard work was paying off. Then the accident.

During his recovery, DeSouza lost 22 pounds. He had twelve hours of surgery to repair multiple fractures in both legs. He was in the hospital for three weeks. Titanium rods are in both legs and they will stay there the rest of his life His rehabilitation consisted of leg extensions, toe touches, knee and hamstring stretches – three hours a day, every day. Doctors told him the injuries would not limit his future playing ability. They told him his legs could be stronger long-term. So DeSouza kept working harder and harder. I saw him at the Military Bowl at RFK Stadium last December and I see him working hard during the pregame warm ups with his teammates when I am on the sidelines at Byrd Stadium. He’s come a long, long way as the photos below indicate.

Pete DeSouza’s recovery has been amazing. The effort he’s put into his recovery to get back on the field has been incredible. Determined and courageous are two words that can describe Pete DeSouza.

Helmets popping off at alarming rate in college football

Kelly Whiteside of USA TODAY wrote about helmets popping off at alarming rate in college football during play this college football season. I've seen it occur a number of times while taking pictures on the sidelines (see below). The article states the NCAA is keeping track of the amount of times helmets come off during play and during games, the back judge is the person tallying the times when a player loses a helmet.

A couple reasons this is happening are players keeping the buckles on their chinstrap loose so the helmet can easily pop off. Also, players are slightly deflating the air cushions because they don't want the helmets tight on their heads.

Hopefully the NCAA Football Rules Committee can find a way to cut down on the number of instances helmets come off. How about making the play dead when a player's helmet comes off? Either that or make sure players are buckling the straps properly.

Kenny Tate Out for the Season

Coach Edsall said Kenny Tate (#6) will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing season-ending surgery later this week but is expected to return in 2012 after applying for a medical redshirt.

Tate is eligible for the medical redshirt because he has not redshirted in the past and has played in no more than 30 percent of the team’s games in the first half of the season.

Coach Edsall after the Terps lost their 5th in 6 games: "We can win and we’re going to win. I have no doubt about that. It’s going to get done."

Maryland’s losing streak continues as the Terrapins suffered their third straight defeat, a 41-16 pasting at Florida State. QB C.J. Brown made his second straight start but was knocked out of the game after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Seminoles LB Nigel Bradham. Brown could have returned but Coach Edsall opted for Danny O’Brien to finish the game. Question now is who starts next Saturday vs Boston College?

To recap the game: QB E.J. Manuel threw for a touchdown and rushed for another for the Seminoles (4-3, 2-2 ACC). Jermaine Thomas and Davonte Freeman each scored on long touchdown runs in the second half as the Seminoles extended their home winning streak over Maryland to eleven.

The Seminoles went up 14-0 after scoring on their first two drives. However, they led only 17-3 lead at the half. A FSU missed field goal, interception and inspired play by the Maryland defense (Three sacks) kept the score close. With the loss Maryland falls to 2-5, 1-3 in the ACC.

I'm going to remain positive here and toss out a few notes:

QB's C.J. Brown and Danny O'Brien combined for 272 passing yards.

WR Quintin McCree had 9 catches for 177 yards including a 69 yard pass from Danny O'Brien.

RB Davin Meggett moved past 2,000 career rushing yards on his first carry of the game.

WR Marcus Leak started the first game of his career and had 8 receptions for 61 yards and a 15 yard TD catch in the 4th quarter.

Three of Maryland's top four tacklers were freshmen: Titus Till (8), Lorne Goree (7) and Mario Rowson (5)

Saturday's Uniform vs Florida State

Maryland will wear the white terraprint helmets for the first time along with white jerseys and black pants when the Terps travel to Florida State this Saturday October 22 at 3:30 PM. Saturday's game will be carried regionally by ABC and in parts of the nation on ESPN2.

Cameron Chism models this combination on August 22nd when the Terps unveiled the new uniforms.

Here are some of the shots I took. During the game I experimented using a monopod and was never really comfortable with it. So last night was not one of my better efforts and I was a little disappointed in my shots that I took. I'm still learning more skills every game but in the future I'll select a soccer game or high school football game close by my house to experiment with my camera and settings.

Game time decision I guess. Nothing against C.J. Brown but I'm hoping Coach Edsall sticks with O'Brien's experience for this game. Neither O'Brien or Brown passed very well in the 21-16 loss to Georgia Tech. Brown was 4-of-17 passing for 36 yards and an interception but he had nine carries for 124 yards and a TD. O'Brien was replaced after completing only 1 of 6 passes for 17 yards and an interception.

Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun thinks it will be C.J. Brown starting at QB for the Terps.

The Baltimore Sun reports Senior offensive lineman Andrew Gonnella suffered a season ending knee injury vs Georgia Tech.

QB C.J. Brown summed it up:
“There’s not words to describe what he brings to the team,” QB C.J.Brown said. “He is our leader. He is our captain. It fired us up. It was tough.”

Gutsy effort to comeback in the fourth quarter for the Terps, who entered that quarter down 21-3. QB C.J. Brown led the Terps to two scores, including a 77 yard TD run.

The Terps lost more than the football game. They lost starting left guard Andrew Gonnella to a terrible leg injury, so bad that ESPN would not replay it. They lost linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield early in the second half and he did not return.

It felt a little strange watching the Terps first road game on TV and not being on the sidelines shooting pictures. The Terps return home to Byrd Stadium next Saturday night vs Clemson at 7:00 PM.
